Biographical / Historical

The newspapers in this collection focus on the far southeast side neighborhood areas of Hegewisch, East Side, South Chicago and South Deering. These community areas were annexed to Chicago in 1889 along with the rest of Hyde Park Township. The region’s ports and proximity to railroads contributed to the area’s industrial development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Hegewisch News began publication in the 1940s with offices at 3142 E. 133rd Street, and later at 3150 E. 133rd Street. The newspaper originally served the communities of Hegewisch, Burnham and Calumet City, but later issues included the East Side. The paper ceased publication in 1994. Chicago Alderman Edward R. Vrdolyak had a column in the paper.

Lakeview Publishing, Inc. operated several community newspapers. On October 11, 1990, they began publication of the Hegewisch Herald and The East Side Times to replace the community newspapers that were previously published by the Lakeshore News Group. The publishers were Lee Anglin and George Grbič. The papers served Hegewisch, Burnham, Calumet City, East Side and South Chicago communities. In 1993, Lakeview Publishing, Inc. created The Herald to combine The East Side Times and Hegewisch Herald and replace the Daily Calumet that had served the larger Southeast Side before it discontinued publication in 1987. The same publishers issued the South Chicago Chronicle beginning in 1991.

East Side News was published by the Hegewisch News and Pub. Co. from 1989 to 1990.

The South Chicago Herald began publication on February 1, 1994 by the Sunset News Group. The newspaper served Burnham, Calumet City, East Side, Hegewisch, South Chicago, South Deering and Vet’s Park.
