Biographical / Historical
Willietta Jones Temple was a longtime member of Lilydale First Baptist Church and a resident of Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.
Lilydale First Baptist Church History
The church was formed on Sunday, April 20, 1913 with seven congregants. This first Missionary Baptist church in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood was formed on Sunday, April 20, 1913 with seven congregants. One year later, the members officially established First Baptist Church of Lilydale on June 28, 1914.
Lilydale First Baptist Church placed an emphasis on worship and community involvement. The church showcased their worship with gospel music from their Sunshine Band, and celebrated with annual Prayer Breakfasts, Teas, and Men’s/Women’s Day programs. Lilydale First Baptist Church became a founding member church of the Developing Communities Project (DCP) in the mid-1980s.

Also included are materials from other churches and documentation of Lilydale community organizations’ work.
Arrangement
This collection is arranged into two series: Series 1: Lilydale First Baptist Church Records, 1972-2009 and Series 2: Event Programs, Handouts, and Serials, 1941-2009, undated. Series 1 is divided into two subseries: Subseries 1: Awards, Calendars, Directories, and Event Programs, 1972-2008 and Subseries 2: Bulletins and Newsletters, 1981-2009. Series 1: Subseries 2 is organized alphabetically and then chronologically.
