Biographical / Historical
Norwood Park, one of Chicago’s seventy-seven community areas, is located on the far northwest side of the city. Native Americans lived in the area for many years before Europeans began to arrive in the 1830s. Farms, houses, and a railroad were built in the area, and Norwood Park was incorporated as a village in 1874. In 1893, it was annexed by the city of Chicago. In the twentieth century Norwood Park gained additional transit options, including both rail lines and roadways. Norwood Park continued to function primarily as a residential community, although over the years schools, religious institutions, and hospitals continued to be built.
