Biographical / Historical
The North Center/Lincoln Square Neighborhood Association was founded in 2000 by longtime residents who joined together to fight the proposed demolition of the Davis Theater by real estate developers who wanted to build condos on the land. The NC/LSNA organized as a reaction to the growing luxury real estate market and chain stores that were driving out longtime residents and local small business owners. The materials in this collection only cover a 2-year span but provide a window into how community members worked together to fight gentrification in their neighborhood.
The collection also details the merger of Ravenswood Hospital with Illinois Masonic Hospital and the loss of jobs in the neighborhood.
